The brief

What it had to do

A private client sent a German medical study guide as a Word document and needed it as a print-ready InDesign file.

The hard part was that no two pages were alike. Every page had its own tables, its own colour coding and its own layout, and the whole thing still had to read as one book.

Inside the InDesign file

How it is built

  • Every page laid out on its own terms: different tables, diagrams and box layouts from page to page
  • One header bar, one type system and one colour logic held across the book, so the variety still reads as one book
  • Comparison tables, such as arteries against veins, and numbered summary boxes for lists students learn by heart
  • Diagrams paired with short explanation boxes, so each figure sits next to its text
  • German text throughout, brought in from the client's Word file
Vascular physiology and cyanotic heart defects. Each numbered defect gets its own box.Fig. 2
“When every page is different, consistency has to come from somewhere else. Here it comes from the header bar, the type and the colours, which never change.”
Acute heart disease, then post-infarction complications and hypertension.Fig. 3
For the client

A print-ready InDesign file built from the client's Word manuscript, with the same header, type and colour system on every page.

Client name withheld.

Arteries against veins, then cardiac catheterisation and lung function tests.Fig. 5
